Itinerary

A major part of this project is the trip itself. We are driving across the country for probably the only time in our lives, so we wanted to make sure that we saw everything we possibly could. Our restrictions are time and money (isn't that always the case?). We are making the tear drop able to sustain itself off grid, which helps with the camping accomodations since we will not be restricted.

We began our itinerary by listing all the places we would like to see or things to do across the country. We have the usual big attrations, like Mount Rushmore, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, St. Louis Arch. Then we began to stretch it out to include some cities, and lesser known attractions.

We will be researching each area we brainstormed to see what the area holds for entertainment and history. We are looking for some treasures less known in America. We bought a guide of national forests so that we can use those as lodging or day adventures. We will keep you updated as the itinerary irons itself out.

Getting the Trailer

On September 25, 2012 we went and purchased our trailer from Harbor Freight Tools. We chose this trailer mostly on price, but also because it was easy to obtain, and it had all of the features that we needed. It has a 1720 lb rating which should be more than enough for what we have planned. There are trailers from Harbor Freight that have lower capacities, and lower prices, if you are planning on an ultralight teardrop, but we wanted some capacity for extra luxuries seeing as we will be living out of this teardrop for months at a time.

We ensured that all the pieces were accounted for, and loosely connected the pieces so we could see the trailer as it will look. This was the first bit of physical evidence that we were actually doing this project. Up unti now its all been doodles on paper or computer models.

My name is Jason, and my wife Amanda and I have decided that our life needs a desperate facelift. As a result of many discussions, as well as coincidentally running across this blog on my internet wanderings, we have decided that we would throw caution to the wind and take a long meandering road trip across the country in a home built Teardrop Trailer.

I have been wanting to build a Teardrop for almost ten years now, and the idea of taking a trip across the country has been hammering my wife and my thoughts for almost as long. When we both decided that we would be changing careers, simplifying our lives, and possibly even moving locations, we agreed that it was the perfect time to take a couple months off and really think about what we wanted out of life.

Over the next year, we will be chronicling the construction of our Teardrop camper, as well as sharing the planning process to our (somewhat irresponsible) road trip
