Trailer
The trailer that we chose for our Teardrop Camper is from Harbor Freight Tools. It is a 48" x 96" trailer with a single axle and a 1720 lb maximum payload capacity. We chose this trailer because it was a really good price and because it had a high enough payload for what we are expecting to build. If you are thinking of making an ultralight Teardrop then Harbor Freight has some lighter/cheaper trailers that have a similar design as the one that we purchased. Another thing that I should mention is that if you have a store within driving distance it is worth your trouble to go and pick the trailer up. When at the store we purchased a one year "club" membership for special offers and sales. Even with the extra cost of the membership, we got the trailer and a spare tire for less than we were expecting to pay for the trailer alone. We will also need to buy some cheap tools specifically for building the teardrop, so that membership should keep paying for itself.
Bolting the frame together was pretty straight forward, and just a matter of following some poorly written instructions. Because the assembly bolts will be buried in the floor of the Teardrop we added some Loctite to all of the fasteners to ensure that they would not come loose from road vibration and wear and tear.
